EDT676-Assignment #4 Create 2 Podcasts: one is Teacher-created to use as a teaching tool in my Physics class. The second should be a student (or other person) on a subject of their choice. If it’s a Physics student, it should be on a topic we study. If it is not a student, it should be on an interesting subject of their choice. TEACHER-CREATED: This is a Podcast on an extremely important subject/skill that all my Physics students need to learn, practice and become firm believers in. That subject/skill is called “Dimensional Analysis” and goes by the less stuffy name of “The Factor/Label Method” or in simplest lingo, “Using your units” (to help solve analytical problems!). My students hear about this within the first couple days of class together and then several times a week, without fail, throughout the entire 18 week semester! It is one of only a few key ideas/skills that I continually stress as being among the most important things they can learn and develop into a powerful problem-solving tool in their “Toolbox” of skills. Some students already know and use this technique by the time they get to Physics (students often take Chemistry before Physics and the Factor/Label method is taught and emphasized by all the Chemistry teachers) and those students take off like a rocket grade- and skill-wise in the course. Some students take a while to catch on to its power and simplicity and of course, some students never board the train. This Pod cast is going to be short, no more than 3 or 4 minutes but it will be an early reminder (that they can refer back to often, and for some students, very often I hope!) of just how important I deem this idea/skill to be for them and their problem-solving abilities. I am going to post this Podcast on our District Web (“Moodle”) and give it to them as an assignment to listen to during the first few days of class. They will hear this mini-lecture repeated a lot in class. They will get plenty of sample work from me in class and of course lots of homework practice to hone this crucial skill. There is no doubt that Dimensional Analysis is on everyone’s list of twenty first century skills of our techno-savvy Digital Natives!! TEACHER PODCAST: “Using Your Units to Solve Analytical Problems.” STUDENT CREATED: This is a casual and free-wheeling discussion about the various types of artificial baits/lures commonly used by “Musky Hunters”. The voice is that of my 24 year old son Brian who is an avid fisherman. His nearly 8 and one-half minute Podcast was done without notes—he just shares what he knows about his hobby and passion. STUDENT PODCAST: “A Basic Discussion of Common Musky Fishing Baits”
